Photo Validation facial recognition scanners are now being tested at Universal’s Islands of Adventure. The scanners are only in use at select turnstiles at the park’s entrance and are available on a limited basis.
An a-frame sign describing the photo validation system was placed in front of the turnstiles. The photos below show the sign(s) in place:

“Get ready for a more seamless visit with Photo Validation – a new faster way to access select experiences throughout Universal Orlando Resort. Photo Validation is currently in Technical Rehearsal and will be available on a limited and unscheduled basis. Guests may continue to use their finger scan at lanes with Photo Validation during Technical Rehearsal.”
It’s worth pointing out that using the Photo Validation facial reconigition system is optional. According to a WDWNT contributor, the scanner took a photo of them after they scanned their ticket. The screen then changed colours from blue to green, according to the contributor.

The technology has been tested at Universal Orlando before. We recently reported that this technology will be used at the entrance turnstiles of Universal’s Epic Universe.
The following information about Photo Validation was added to the Privacy Information Center webpage of the Universal Orlando website:
How is Photo Validation used at Universal Orlando Resort?
Universal Orlando Resort uses photo validation to verify tickets and ticket holders – making it faster and more seamless for you to experience everything we have to offer. We take a photo the first time you use an admission ticket or other admission media. On subsequent visits we will compare you to your photo to verify that your admission is authorised. This information helps facilitate re-entry and prevent fraud.
Are guests required to use photo validation?
You may visit Guest Services to opt-out of the Photo Validation process. You will be instructed to carry and show a photo ID. Team Members will validate your entry with a visual check of your ticket and photo ID.
We’re excited to see Universal Orlando using this technology!
