During today’s Annual Meeting of Shareholders, Disney CEO Bob Iger was today asked about Universal’s Epic Universe and how the company plans to respond to the new theme park.
Iger stated that Disney has been aware of Universal Orlando’s plans to build a new park “for more then a decade.”
Iger pointed out how Disney has produced a number of attractions, themed lands, experiences over the past decade, including Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, TRON Lightcycle/Run and the EPCOT expansion.
It’s worth pointing out that Iger didn’t even hint at any plans on how Disney would respond to Epic Universe, which took us by surprise honestly. Being truth to ourselves, we thought Iger’s answer was kind of a deflection.
Update: Well-known Orlando theme park journalist Ashley Carter posted two small quotes of what Iger said about Epic Universe on X. You can read what Carter posted below:
Quote #1: During the Disney shareholders meeting, Bob Iger was asked about Epic Universe coming to Orlando. Iger said Disney has been aware of Universal’s plans for “more than a decade,” and then he listed several attractions that have opened at Disney World in recent years.

Quote #2: Iger on Disney’s response to Epic Universe: “So by staggering these major launches, we’ve been able to commercially and operationally optimize our new offerings over time rather that having to do it all at once…”

Update #2: Orlando Theme park journalist Scott Gustin has posted a full transcription of the question about Epic Universe and Iger’s answer.

HOWEVER! Our good friend @bioreconstruct pointed something interesting out:
“Interesting since Universal bought the first 475 acres for Epic Universe in April 2016. 8 years ago. Land bought when the then-owner suddenly had to put the land to auction. Universal saw this and swiftly arranged to buy it outright instead. Buying additional land later.”
