Recently published patent filings show Universal is considering implementing sensor-equipped seats and robotic inspection devices to enhance safety on attractions at its theme parks.
One of the patents involves a robot designed to move along the tracks of a roller coaster to detect possible issues. Universal filed for this particular patent in April 2023 and received it on the 18th November (year TBC), according to WESH 2 NEWS.
“That means if they do have to go out on the track, they know exactly where and what’s the problem, without having to go and inspect every single bit of the track all the time and sometimes either waste money or close a ride down for way longer then it needs to be.” Everything You Need To Know’s Tharin White told WESH 2 NEWS.
Another patent application (see below) involves placing sensors on seats, from the base to the harness. This patent was filed on 3rd April 2025 (month before Universal’s Epic Universe opened) and published on the 9th October, 2025.
On this patent, White told WESH 2 NEWS, “There are tons and tons of sensors in this patent publication and that can check anything from your height to your weight to even if you’re adjusted a little bit left or a little bit right inside of the seat. And all of that works together to automatically be able to adjust the seat, not only for comfort but for safety.”
Rider safety has always been a priority for Universal, but it’s prioritised more since the death of 32-year-old Kevin Rodriguez Zavala. The 32-year-old died at hospital after he became unresponsive after riding Stardust Racers at Universal’s Epic Universe.
We have to STRONGLY EMPHASIZE that Universal filed the above-mentioned patents before the tragic Stardust Racers incident occurred. White also stressed this whilst talking to WESH 2 NEWS.
“All we know is that they’re getting a patent right now. We can see it, and then it could potentially help not just Universal, but everyone down the line,” White told WESH 2 NEWS.
