According to an Orange County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) incident report (via WESH 2 NEWS), the guest who died after being found unresponsive on Stardust Racers at Universal’s Epic Universe had a preexisting spinal injury.
The guest, identified as Kevin Rodriguez Zavala, died from multiple blunt impact injuries after riding Stardust Racers, according to Orange County Medical Examiner. It’s still unclear how Zavala was injured while on the roller coaster.
The incident report (via WESH 2 NEWS) said that Zavala was taking a medication, but didn’t specify what it was. For clarification in our reporting, we only learnt yesterday that Zavala was a wheelchair user and had preexisting conditions.
A deputy responded to a medical emergency at 9:20pm and found emergency responders performing CPR on Zavala “directly parallel to the ride tracks,” according to the incident report (via WESH 2 NEWS).
Zavala’s girlfriend was “visibly shaken” and was unable to write a statement. She had been dating Zavala for 10 years.
Our thoughts, prayers, and condolences go to the Zavala’s family and friends at this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers also go to those that attended the medical emergency and tried to save his life. Thank you for your efforts.
Zavala’s family have started a GoFundMe fundraiser to help cover funeral and memorial costs. You can find out more about the fundraiser here.
