A Notice of Commencement (NOC) was recently filed for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, and it lists the contractor for the iconic Magic Kingdom attraction’s extensive refurbishment starting on 6th January, 2025.
The NOC lists Coastal Steel Inc. as the contractor, with work being described as “General Construction.” The document has an expiration date of 13th March, 2026, which suggests the refurbishment could last well into spring 2026.
The recently filed NOC lines up with a permit previously issued to DPR Construction, which also has an expiration date of 13th March, 2026. In case you’re unaware, DPR Construction is known for dealing with complex structural projects, suggesting that the refurbishment’s timeline may be coordinated between the contractors invovled.
A past permit involving Coastal Steel Inc. had a much earlier expiration date of 8th August, 2025. The new March 2026 date lengthens the projected timeline for Coastal Steel’s involvement in the refurbishment.
The refurbishment of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is turning out to be the most comprehensive since it opened. Disney has yet to share details about what work will be carried out, but documents suggest it will be considerable.
