Universal is working with Orange County to extend Kirkman Road almost two miles south, connecting Universal Orlando to Universal’s Epic Universe.

Permits filed with Orange County, Florida recently show that irrigation work is starting on the Kirkman extension project. The project is a joint venture between Universal Orlando and the county to extend the road 1.7 miles south.

The project is expected to be finished by the 30th April, 2025 at the latest, and it will cost a total of $305 million dollars:

“Universal is heading up the project, and is covering more than half the cost, $164 million, as well as any overages.”

Even though major construction on Epic Universe is currently paused due to the global Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, utility work and other “support” work around the site has carried on.

The recently filed Kirkman Extension permits are for installing a new reclaimed water main to an existing water main on Universal Boulevard.  Even though work on utilities has begun, road work is start later this year – 1st December at the latest.

The Kirkman extension will have eight travel lanes, including two bus lanes down the centre. This will help facilitate travel between Universal Orlando Resort and the site of Epic Universe. Pathways for pedestrians and bike likes are also expected, according to proposed plans.

It’s fair to say that the roadway will prove valuable for Universal as there are also plans to build new hotels close to Epic Universe, as the image below shows.

Orange County says the Kirkman extension will increase mobility for Orlando residents, businesses and tourists. The project is expected to create hundreds of short-term construction jobs in the area.
