A father whose son committed suicide at Universal’s Aventura Hotel has filed a wrongful death lawsuit, accusing employees of excessively serving him alcohol in an open-air rooftop bar which allegedly lacked sufficient barriers.
Alfred Bahna sued various organisations, including Universal Orlando Resort and the business venture between Universal and the hotel’s owner Loews Corp., last week for more than $30,000.
Bahna’s son, Matthew, 27-years-old, died last year after jumping from the Bar 17 Bistro atop Universal’s Aventura Hotel.
In the lawsuit, Bahna said employees served his 5-foot-3-tall son six tall drinks within 90 minutes, so he was “intoxicated to the extent that his normal faculties and judgement were substantially and significantly impaired.”
The 27-year-old man remained at the bar after it had closed at midnight, but bar employees didn’t monitor him as he acted questionably and tired to climb the perimeter barrier wall, the lawsuit said.
Just after 12:30am, he was able to pull himself over the glass and jumped to his death following three attempts, according to a report from an Orlando police detective, via the Orlando Sentinel.
“The defendants knew or should have known that the open-air design of the rooftop deck of the Bar 17 Bistro was unsafe and inadequate barrier protection,” the lawsuit said, claiming it was “foreseeable” that drunk patrons could climb on a sink or furniture to scale the barrier wall which lacked “protective measures, such as anti-climb roller bar.”
